All the preparation will end in an epic showdown in the desert, where only one will ride away as the champion of the 2021 Red Bull Rampage. In advance of the competition, riders and their support crew will spend four days building their lines, followed by a rest day, and then four practice days. The competition format will remain the same, with an elite group of riders carving their ultimate lines into the side of near-vertical sandstone ridges with the help of their two-person build crews. For the 20th anniversary, get ready to celebrate as we not only look back at some of the best moments and stories from over the years, but also highlight the progression, tricks and technology that have shaped the contest throughout the years. Get on top of everything happening at Red Bull Rampage 2021. The inaugural Red Bull Rampage was held in 2001, and since then, 14 different events and 9 different winners have earmarked their place in the history books. Red Bull is thrilled for the return of the premier big-mountain freeride event in 2021, marking the 20-year anniversary of some of the biggest and baddest tricks, lines, and moments in freeriding history. I grew up just miles down the road watching this contest so to be among my idols and compete alongside them is going to be such a huge accomplishment.” “I’m ready to compete on the biggest stage in the sport. “It’s a tremendous honor to be invited to Red Bull Rampage for the first time,” said Jaxson Riddle. All invited athletes must confirm their attendance by September 27 th, at which point anyone who drops out or is unable to attend would be replaced by an event alternate and the competition roster will be set. Six former winners and two event rookies are amongst the list of athletes invited to compete, highlighting a true cross section of the sport today. The top ten riders from the 2019 competition were automatically pre-qualified into this year’s event, while the other 5 wildcards and 5 alternates were selected by a committee of former Rampage competitors, pro athletes, judges, and industry experts based on competition results and video submissions. Looking forward to getting the shovels in the dirt.” A new venue means open doors for creativity, but also a big build to have our lines ready for finals. “While we missed the 2020 event, I know myself and the rest of the riders are looking forward to getting back out to Utah. First-time Rampage participant, Reed Boggs, began the month of October as Rampage alternate, but after a few riders dropped out for injuries, Boggs stepped in and made a name for himself by landing on the final podium spot in third place.“After a short hiatus, it’s exciting to see Red Bull Rampage return this year, especially since it’s the 20-year anniversary,” said defending Red Bull Rampage champion Brandon Semenuk. For 2021, the Rampage returned to the stage of the 20 Rampage, and once again putting the winners of those two years, Brandon Semenuk (2016) and Kurt Sorge (2017) head-to-head, along with a collective who’s who of freeride mountain biking.Īfter each rider threw down their best effort on Friday, Semenuk would once again beat Sorge for an unprecedented fourth Rampage title (Kurt Sorge is the only other with three Rampage wins), and Sorge finished in second place. Of the fifteen Red Bull Rampages, three riders have won a total of 9 of those events, while six riders have a single Rampage. Fifteen of the world’s most elite freeriders were selected for this year’s Rampage, yet by the time the red dust from practice settled on finals eve, just 11 riders were healthy enough to compete on freeride’s most hallowed ground. The Rampage has evolved from a loose and dusty skid-and-pray fest in the early 2000s to a display of highly skilled big mountain freeriding that combines jaw-dropping slopestyle tricks on the iconic Utah mountainside. On Friday, October 15, the fifteenth Rampage took place (the event took a few years off, plus 2020 was well, you know…), and 15 of mountain biking’s most accomplished freeride athletes once again put their skills, both line building and riding, to the ultimate test. Few could have predicted the impact that groundbreaking event would have on the sport of mountain biking. It’s been 20 years since the inaugural Red Bull Rampage took place in Virgin, Utah.
